Waterproofing is where bathrooms are won or lost
A bathroom that fails does it behind the tile, and by the time you see it, the framing is involved. We use a proper waterproofing membrane system in wet areas rather than relying on backer board alone, slope the shower pan correctly to the drain, and detail the corners and the curb where almost all failures start. It adds a line to the quote and it's the line we'd argue hardest to keep.
Scope, honestly
A minor remodel — new vanity, toilet, fixtures, paint, maybe re-glaze or replace the floor — is a genuinely good-value project and often lands in the $3,000 to $10,000 range. A partial remodel that includes new tile and a rebuilt shower typically runs $10,000 to $25,000. A full gut that moves plumbing, changes the layout or adds a custom shower goes above that. We'll tell you which one you're describing before you get attached to a number.
Who does the plumbing and electrical
Texas licenses plumbers and electricians at the state level, and all plumbing and electrical work on our bathrooms is performed by Texas state-licensed subcontractors. That includes moving supply lines and drains, and anything that touches the panel. Where a permit is required we pull it.
Living with the job
A single-bathroom home is the hardest version of this project, so we sequence it to minimize the days you're without one and tell you upfront exactly which days those are. Demo is the dusty part and we contain it; the rest is quieter than people expect.
Austin specifics
Austin work is run by our Central Texas crew, not driven over from Houston. The building stock splits sharply: older East and Central Austin bungalows with pier-and-beam foundations, original wood windows and knob-and-tube legacy wiring, versus newer suburban construction north and east. Austin also requires contractor registration through Building and Trade Contractor Services before permits are pulled, and historic-district properties carry additional review — we'll tell you at the estimate which applies to your address.
