The base under the slab decides how long it lasts
Houston-area soil is expansive clay: it swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and it will crack a slab that wasn't prepared for it. That means excavating to proper depth, compacting the base in lifts, laying and compacting select fill where the soil is bad, and using reinforcement — rebar on a grid for anything that carries load, fiber or mesh for light-duty flatwork. Pouring on unprepared ground is how you get a patio that's split in three within two years.
Control joints, done on purpose
Concrete cracks; the job is to decide where. We cut control joints at the correct spacing and depth so the slab cracks along those lines instead of randomly across the middle. We also isolate the pour from the house foundation so the two can move independently, which they will.

Drainage
